if they side with the president of the united states think about what president obama has done for the progressive movement in this country in the democratic party. how can you not stand with him on this? how much more information do these lawmakers need? have we not covered it enough? other democratic senators with high ratings from the national rifle association have also refused to say if they support the president's package. max baucus of montana, senator heidi heitkamp of north dakota, senator johnson of south dakota. senator donnelley of i7d ind. senator begich of alaska, senator manchin of west virginia, senator tester of montana. however, senator mark warner spoke out in favor of the president's plan and said he believes it has bipartisan support. those senators all have a or a-plus ratings from the national rifle association. reid has a b rating. these senators know they will lose their high rating and maybe become a target with the nra if they vote for a sensible assault weapons ban. you see, we had the assault weapons ban back in 1994, but we're so screwed up in wash

the state department. we begin with president obama going big and trying to move fast on gun control. we have new polling that may help explain the political need for speed. today at the white house, as you probably know, president obama laid out a number of proposals and executive actions he is taking. in the room with him were a number of parents of children killed in the sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut, including lynn and chris mcdonnell, the parents of grace mcdonnell. president obama spoke about grace today. >> and when i visited newtown last month, i spent some private time with many of the families who lost their children that day. and one was the family of grace mcdonnell. grace's parents are here. grace was 7 years old when she was struck down. just a gorgeous, caring, joyful little girl. i'm told she loved pink. she loved the beach. she dreamed of becoming a painter. and so just before i left chris, her father gave me one of her paintings. and i hung it in my private study just off the oval office. and every time i look at this painting, i think about grace

, but it appears that they're going to try to take this to the state level to try and counter balance what president obama's going to try to do from the local level as well. the only way this gets down to what the president wants is to have a ground swelling from a grass roots level. the way he won the election is the way he's going to try to move and make some amendments to try and get some gurns out of circulation. but it's just like the mothers against drunk driving type of an issue. for a while people didn't want it, then they thought it was silly and then it became a ground swell of grass roots support. thankly it's smart for this reason. it kind of gives cover for the democrats, also some -- republicans that are looking to come forward the president's -- if the state legislators feel that type of pressure, it will trickle up in this particular instance to the federal level and they will have to make some changes. >> interesting, though, the voices coming out of d.c., talking about impeachment. i just want to play senator rand paul appearing on fox and what he was saying about preside

president obama's am nishs proposal to curb gun violence. mayors from mayor cities are in d.c. right now meeting with vice president joe biden discussing the president's proposals. meantime, as this huffington post headline states, fury by some on the far right as the nra you might say is sticking to their guns rejecting the president's ideas. the nra's also defending the much-criticized ad that mentions the president's daughters. here's nra president david keene just this morning a couple of hours ago on the "today" show. it is not about the president's daughters. >> the ad mentions the president's daughters. >> keeping children safe, savannah. you get in to a bidding match. we shouldn't have a 30-round magazine or a 20 round. the president says let vees a ten. the governor of new york says, well, i can top that. we'll have a seven-round magazine. this is all sort of makes you feel good but, in fact, it doesn't do much. now, if you are out there and if you're crazy and if you've got a gun like this and if you're going to shoot people with it, it takes a second or so to change the magazi

luther king day, the presidential inauguration celebration as barack obama begins his second term as president of the united states in washington, d.c. they'll have parades, they'll have entertainment, they have music from beyonce, stevie wonder, queen latifah, movie stars like kirsten dunst, alfre woodard, queen latifah. they have to do it on sunday, because legally it has to take place on january 20th. but i have a feeling most people will be too focused on football and honey boo boo to watch any of it. in general, more people claim they watch things like the presidential inauguration than actually do. in fact, we sent a camera on to hollywood boulevard today. we asked people what they thought of the inauguration, even though it hasn't happened yet. and again, this is an event that will take place days from now. so there's no way they could possibly have an opinion on it, but that didn't stop people from having them on tonight's edition of "lie witness news." >> what did you think of the inauguration yesterday? >> it was awesome. it was a real part of history. it was really nice
